I remember seeing the sunflowers now that you linked. I can't believe you can have sunflowers this time of year...wow.

Anyway, we had a lot of years of disappointing gardens because of critters of all shapes and sizes that decided to help themselves. We still have skunks, deer, possums, moles, voles, birds, and various other "pests" but we have put up a six foot fence to keep them out as much as possible. I grow lots of stuff up on my deck in pots just so I will have some color to enjoy at all times of the year.
